What Did Tony Soprano Think of the ‘Sopranos’ Ending? Actor James Gandolfini Breaks Silence

James Gandolfini, who played Tony Soprano in HBO’s long-running Jersey mob drama “The Sopranos,” says that like many of the show’s fans, he was baffled at first by the show’s ambiguous ending, the New York Post reports.

Gandolfini talks about the infamous ending in a new oral history of the show that runs in April’s issue of Vanity Fair, the story reports.

Says Gandolfini: “When I first saw the ending, I said, ‘What the f–k?’ I mean, after all I went through, all this death, and then it’s over like that?”

At the end of the final episode, the screen goes dark with Tony Soprano and his family apparently being circled by would-be assassins in a restaurant. Many fans of the show saw the fade-out as a cop-out.

But Gandolfini, for one, eventually came around.

“After I had a day to sleep, I just sat there and said, ‘That’s perfect,’” the actor says.

Also commenting on the show’s ending was Lorraine Bracco, who played Dr. Jennifer Melfi.

The actress says in the Vanity Fair piece: “I would have wanted it to end differently. But God knows we’ve talked about that ending for five years now — we’re still talking about it. People stop me in the street. ‘Did you get the ending? Did I miss something?’ I thought it was very, very shrewd.”

  1. While I get the play on words, it was actually a cut to black, not a fade out. 🙂

  2. The music was “Don’t Stop Believing” – the family decided to go to Holstein’s on the spur of the moment. The camera suggested that bad guys were lurking (one of the bad guys was simply a real customer who was asked on the spot to be in the scene) but nothing else moved in that direction. Point is, everything was deliberately planed to allow for any sequel they want because more things point to it not being a “hit” than in that direction. I grew up in that town and went to that soda shop after school dances. This series was like old home week for me and I watched every nuance. When AJ comes back in his own show as the boss, then we will all know why you don’t stop believing!
