CBS’s Reruns Top Most of What’s on the Other Broadcast Nets — But Thursday Belongs to Fox’s ‘Idol’

A mostly repeat lineup on CBS was good enough for second place Thursday night, even as ABC and NBC put up all fresh programming — but no one had an answer for Fox’s “American Idol.”

With “Idol” surging three-tenths of a ratings point from last week to a 4.2 average in the key 18-49 demo, Fox claimed an easy win in the Nielsen overnights, TVbytheNumbers.com reports. Fox finished prime time with a 3.2 average, followed by CBS (2.4), ABC (2.1), Univision (1.5) and NBC (1.3). Fox also won total viewers, averaging 11.8 million to 8.8 million for CBS, 8.1 million for ABC, 3.7 million for Univision and 3.2 million for NBC.

CBS’s reruns generally trounced the competition on ABC and NBC, although ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” and Fox’s “Touch” put up a fight. A repeat of CBS’s “The Big Bang Theory” at 9 p.m. won the hour with a 3.0 average rating in 18-49, topping fresh episodes of “Grey’s” (2.9), “Touch” (2.3) and NBC’s “The Office” (2.1) and “Up All Night” (1.5 for the season finale).

Even while finishing in fifth place for the night, NBC had a couple of reasons to celebrate: "Community" and "30 Rock" were up slightly, although both settled for less than stellar 1.4 averages in 18-49. On the other hand, "The Office" fell three-tenths of a point to a series low 2.1, while the moribund “Awake” held steady with its series lows, averaging a 0.9.
