Oprah Targets 2014 as Point When OWN Will ‘Reach the Summit’

Apr 6, 2012  •  Post A Comment

Oprah Winfrey talked about the difficult launch of her OWN cable network during Thursday’s Discovery Communications upfront presentation, vowing that the channel will reach the summit in 2014, Advertising Age reports.

Winfrey thanked advertisers for sticking with the channel, credited restructuring with putting OWN in a better postion to move forward, and touted the network’s lineup of new prime-time series, which we reported earlier this week.

Winfrey invoked a mountain-climbing analogy, saying: “With our restructuring and right-sizing, and really getting into the sauce of what needs to happen every day when you’re building a channel, I feel like I can at least now see the summit. [We are] nowhere near the summit, but I can see the summit."

David Zaslav, president of OWN partner Discovery Communications, pointed to OWN’s momentum, saying he’s pleased with the network’s growth despite “what you hear in the press.”

  1. What is the Summit? a .2 rating?

  2. Since Oprah has said on CBS This Morning last Friday: LifeClass is the reason I did the network.
I’m very surprised that Oprah’s live-tour, primetime centerpiece, “LifeClass,” is not doing better with all the promotion and major city (NY) exposure that it’s getting. It’s behind even Sweetie Pies and Beverly’s Full House shows on OWN.
I thought for sure that first-run Oprah driven shows on OWN would be the most viewed programs.
Yet the following LifeClass ratings are getting awfully close to the cancelled Rosie numbers.
    3.25.12–LifeClass: 258,000 viewers
    4.2.12–LifeClass: 243,000 viewers
