Pendulum Swings Again in Battle for Morning Domination Between NBC and ABC

The momentum has shifted again in the closely watched battle for ratings domination between the flagship morning shows on NBC and ABC.

The Los Angeles Times reports that NBC’s “Today” regained the No. 1 spot last week, according to figures from Nielsen. “Today” averaged 5.2 million viewers for the week of April 16, vs. 5.0 million for ABC’s “Good Morning America,” the story reports.

That’s a return to “normalcy” after “GMA” wrested the top spot away from “Today” during the week of April 9. ABC’s win that week broke an almost unbelievable 852-week winning streak by “Today,” as we previously reported.

“Today’s” numbers for the week of April 16 were its best in six weeks, the Times piece notes.

ABC is digging in for a long war for supremacy, the Times reports. The story quotes "GMA" senior executive producer Tom Cibrowski saying in a statement: "A year ago I don’t think anyone would have believed that we would be trading days and weeks with the ‘Today’ show.”

CBS also has a horse in the race, but its recently reworked morning show remains a distant third in the ratings.

  1. I recently switched to watching CBS in the AM – they provide actual news rather than just sensationalism and celebrity gossip…

  2. I watch CBS not only because they have real news, but more importantly they DON’T have Nancy Grace. She’s enough to scare small children.
