Leading Contender Surfaces to Replace Ann Curry on NBC’s ‘Today’

A name has surfaced at the top of the list of contenders to replace Ann Curry as co-host of NBC’s “Today” show, the Arizona Daily Star reports.

Savannah Guthrie, who co-hosts the third hour of "Today," tops the list, according to the story.

As previously reported, NBC executives are working on a plan to replace Curry only a year after she became the co-host of "Today." The NBC show is the perennial morning ratings leader, but ABC’s "Good Morning America" overtook it for several weeks this spring.

Nevertheless, any plan to bring in Guthrie to replace Curry is "far from finalized," reports TVNewser.com.

Negotiations to remove Curry didn’t begin until relatively recently, and it’s unclear what role co-host Matt Lauer will have in the decision, the story says.

Guthrie’s roots are in Arizona, the Daily Star notes. She grew up in Tucson, graduated from the University of Arizona and is a former anchor at KVOA-TV in Tucson.

  1. Time will tell how this scenario will play out but one senses that Ms Curry isn’t just a pretty face to play along to demands (she does have her lawyer already on board) which is probably what got her in trouble in the first place…
ps- Where do I sent my resume again Matt?

  2. NBC should understand that it’s not Anne Curry affecting their ratings — it’s the tired structure and format. GMA has become aggressive — and in so doing has inreased the show’s pace, making the entire show seem to move at lightening speed, they’ve added several young and vibrant personalities to support the anchors and created more of a team centered rather than anchor centered approach. Today was always my favorite — and I love Curry — but I was lured over to ABC — and now when I do watch Today it just seems…..sleepy! (and old – in desperate need of a facelift)

  3. The show IS kind of tired but Ann Curry is certainly not a fit for Today. She overcompensates during her interviews, has an uncomfortable banter with the other personalities on the set, makes comments that just don’t make any sense yet is more fit to be a real part of NBC News rather than Today. Noting that the show falls under News, after the first half hour it’s nothing more than junk and entertainment. Put her back on Dateline, use her on that failing show Rock Center and on Nightly News, even over at MSNBC.
And Savannah would be a mistake. The show needs a fresh, new face not some of the same boring talking heads they have currently. That’s why the show is tired. Using the same talking heads has become a thing of the past as this show finally decided to get a bit more diverse in their selection of talking heads. As in more people of color. They used to use the same people over and over, the same bland white talking heads. Now they’ve branched out (thank you Comcast) which is good. Give it time. Today will be back. But a fresh new face…not the same old tired faces that put them where they are today. In turmoil.
