‘CBS This Morning’ Shakes Up Its On-Air Lineup

With recent changes at NBC’s “Today” show getting headlines, another entry in the morning derby has decided to shake things up too.

CBS News announced that “CBS This Morning” is showing the door to Erica Hill, the only remaining face from the network’s previous installment of its morning show, Deadline.com reports.

In her place will be Chief White House Correspondent Norah O’Donnell, who will join co-hosts Charlie Rose and Gayle King beginning this fall.

The story reports: “O’Donnell will leave the White House, a position she has held since joining CBS News in June 2011, to assume her new role while continuing as the principal substitute anchor for ‘Face the Nation.’ Hill ‘is in discussions regarding a new role,’ CBS News said.

Said CBS News Chairman Jeff Fager: “Norah is an accomplished reporter with all the skills for the job. She’s a hard worker who knows her story and, as she has shown time after time at the White House, she can think on her feet on live television.”

O’Donnell was previously the chief Washington correspondent for MSNBC and a contributing correspondent for NBC’s “Today,” the story notes.

The CBS morning show continues to trail rivals ABC and NBC significantly in the ratings race.

The report adds: “The news comes after O’Donnell recently substituted for Hill, sitting next to Rose and King on the CBS morning program. Here’s what O’Donnell said about her guest stint on the show just last week: ‘I told Erica Hill who is letting me fill in for her, I promised not to leave too many crumbs in her keyboard; I won’t mess up her office too much.’”

  1. Cutting out more fluff perhaps? I like the new CBS This Morning. If one happens to have a brain, it’s the only network morning show that can be stomached.

  2. O’Donnell was a welcome “Sit In” last week for Hill.
O’Donnell obviously has the news under her belt and is involved extemperaneously in any on-going conversation. Her ability to ask relevant questions without a “cheatsheet” is a compliment to her counterpart, Rose, as she also knows how to listen and respond in turn to what she just learned.
This show will grow an audience. Let’s hope CBS management recognizes all the values it brings to “The Vast Wasteland” and gives it time to flourish businesswise as well as it already has journalistically.

  3. Does this really surprise anyone? It was just a matter of time. Erica was the hold over from The Early Show while the transition was made. Her days were numbered. Just ask Mark McEwen.

  4. What is wrong with CBS? First they hire the no talent Erica Hill for their morning show, then they bring a lesser than no talent Gayle King (only because she’s Oprah’s “buddy”), and now the most obnoxious news reporter on the planet, Norah O’Donnell – better get some talented producers over at CBS or they’ll remain in last place forever!
