Mother of Colorado Shooting Suspect Says ABC News Mischaracterized Her Remarks

ABC News is defending itself after coming under fire over an interview it conducted with the mother of James Holmes, the suspect in the Colorado theater shooting that killed 12 people and injured dozens more, Deadline.com reports.

The news operation is standing behind its report on the telephone interview, which took place in the hours after the shooting early Friday in an Aurora, Colo., movie theater. ABC News producer Matthew Mosk conducted the interview.

“Holmes family attorney Lisa Damiani read a statement today at a news conference in San Diego on behalf of Arlene Holmes to clarify her remarks to Mosk, which she says were mischaracterized by ABC News,” the story reports. “Holmes said she was referring to herself, not her son, when she told Mosk ‘You have the right person’ when Mosk told her that a man he believed was her son had been arrested in the shooting.”

The report adds: “ABC News says Damiani contacted the network shortly before the news conference to determine if there was an audio recording of the conversation between Mosk and her client. After learning there was no recording, ABC News says Damiani read Arlene Holmes’ statement at the news conference.”

  1. ABC “News” should be ashamed of themselves in the wake of the coverage of this latest shooting incident. Brian Ross mis-identifies Holmes as a member of the tea party and now this?
Of course I think ABC “News” has a lot to be ashamed of anyway since they’ve taken all their newscasts to the edge of being TMZ.
What has happened to thoughtful, rational, dispassionate reporting in general? In the rush to sensationalize everything in the name of ratings, the information that we in the public get is more and more biased to one ideology or another — in the name of ratings and dollars. It’s very disappointing.
