New Jersey Weighs ‘Snookiville Law’ to Help Control Reality Casts

A law proposed by a New Jersey assemblyman would allow townships to license reality show productions and levy fees, in turn giving them the ability to hire more police to control reality show cast members and their fans, reports CNN.com.

The proposed law is called the "Snookiville Law" — named after Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi, one of the reality stars on MTV’s "Jersey Shore." Two years ago, Snooki was arrested for disorderly conduct in Seaside, N.J.

"This bill will permit local officials to make sure taxpayers don’t get ‘Snook’-ered or public safety is compromised when reality stars such as Snooki or JWoww come to town," said New Jersey Assemblyman Ronald Dancer, who is behind the law.

Dancer, a Republican, said he doesn’t want to discourage reality shows from taping in New Jersey, but wants to protect taxpayers.

“Jersey Shore” is taping its final season, but a spinoff with Polizzi and Jennifer “JWoww” Farley is in production in Manchester, near Dancer’s district, the report notes.

  1. Every city, town, and even our entire country, is so much better off when lawmakers aren’t in session. I don’t care if the “lawmaker” is on something as local as the board of directors of a condominium or is an elected official on the local, state or federal level, their “power” seems to go to their heads. They have to constantly write laws to give them more power. Every person elected to every office ought to have term limits. As Lord Acton, expressed in a letter to Bishop Mandell Creighton in 1887, “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” People don’t have to actually have absolute power, they just have to think they won’t be accountable for their actions.

This line pertains to so-called entertainers as much, if not more, than to politicians. I am not a fan of the free lunch (nor reality shows). If a city needs to hire more police protection for its residents and the TV show peeps, then let them take a piece of the action. Taxes and laws are meant to aid specific needs. It’s when they are abused and used for other things, that they need to be dropped.
