A popular cable drama series that helped define ABC Family is coming to an end, according to Nellie Andreeva at Deadline.com.
Andreeva wrties that "The Secret Life of the American Teenager," the "drama from ‘7th Heaven’ creator Brenda Hampton, was the breakout hit that put ABC Family on the scripted map when it premiered in June 2008. It also helped launch several of the next generation of successful ABC Family series. Additionally, it made a star out of lead Shailene Woodley, who went on to land the co-lead opposite George Clooney in ‘The Descendants,’ a role that earned her much acclaim."
The series is readying its final 12-episode season for a March 2013 premiere.
According to the version of the story in The Hollywood Reporter’s Live Feed blog, the final season will bring the show’s total episode count to more than 120. The decision to end the show was relayed to its stars by creator Brenda Hampton, the piece adds.
The program, which deals with a teenager’s unplanned pregnancy, stars Woodley as the teen and Molly Ringwald as her mom.
