Romney’s ‘Binders Full of Women’ Becomes an Internet Sensation

The most lasting impression from Tuesday night’s second presidential debate may have been made by an awkwardly phrased comment by Republican challenger Mitt Romney. The Los Angeles Times reports that Romney’s remark about “binders full of women” has taken on a life of its own on the Internet.

“Minutes after Mitt Romney claimed that he brought ‘binders full of women’ to his cabinet in Massachusetts, the phrase was lighting up Twitter and had already spawned a new website,” the story reports. “The website http://bindersfullofwomen.tumblr.com/ mocks Romney’s comment with a clever array of visuals including a Trapper Keeper — a binder of yore, for those too cool to remember — emblazoned with a single word in pink neon: ‘Women.’ The site also shows a photo of Hillary Rodham Clinton, wearing sunglasses, with a bubble out of her mouth that says, ‘Romney still uses binders? LOL.’

“At the top of the page is a picture of Romney, with a speech bubble that quotes the binders comment, and shows a stack of binders next to photos of Taylor Swift, Paris Hilton, and Kim Kardashian.”

Romney made the remark during the debate with President Obama at Hofstra University, where much of the focus was on appealing to women voters. Romney, the story reports, “recalled that when he assembled his cabinet when he was governor of Massachusetts ‘we took a concerted effort to go out and find women who had backgrounds that could be qualified to become members of our cabinet.

“’I went to a number of women’s groups and said, “Can you help us find folks,” and they brought us whole binders full of women.’”

On the day after the debate, “Binders Full of Women” now has its own Facebook page — which had more than 47,000 likes within about an hour after it first surfaced, the report says.

The phrase was also trending on Twitter. The report notes that New York Times columnist Nick Kristof tweeted: “I see #BindersFullofWomen is trending, but my take is that women should be holding up half the sky, not filling binders.” That tweet was retweeted more than 700 times, the report says.

The piece also notes: “Vanity Fair’s Twitter feed added, ‘Newt Gingrich, watching from home: “Binders Full of Women” is a great name for my memoir.’”

“A liberal ‘super PAC,’ American Bridge, announced that it had purchased the domain name BindersFullOfWomen.com to ‘educate voters on Romney’s REAL record on issues important to women,’” the report adds.

  1. If this is the best the liberal twitter-sphere can come up with their candidate is REALLY in trouble. A tanking economy, a foreign policy that is blowing up in our face, a President who hasn’t passed a budget in 4 YEARS…and this is the “seminal moment” of last night’s debate??? If I was Hillary, with all the boiling water she’s cooking in right now, I’d want to keep as low a profile as I could even if she’s still hiding out in Peru.

  2. Of course, the really big story is how Obama and moderator Crowley got it wrong during the debate, about declaring Libya an act or terrorism. Later, Crowley attempted to ‘walk it back’ and today the Twitterverse is talking much more about the lie promoted by Obama and Crowley about Libya, even if Romney neglected to capitalize on the lie during the debate. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/right-turn/post/obama-still-wrong-on-libya-crowley-blows-it/2012/10/17/b2e7eede-1841-11e2-a55c-39408fbe6a4b_blog.html

  3. Obama can still win!!! If a third party candidate jumps in like perot/paul. Haw. Obama is done! And to think I voted for him the first time. Go ahead. Blame me. I apologize

  4. As a woman I’m not offended at all and I completly understood Romeny’s analogy. If you can’t understand what he was trying to say by “binders with Women” then you have bigger problems…

  5. There is a reason why Jennifer Rubin’s column is titled “Right Turn”

  6. Hers is not an opinion piece, so you cannot dissuade us of her facts.

  7. Way to go, TV Week! Two anti-Romney stories in one digest. No bias here!

  8. Agreed. I think this falls under the category of missing the forest for the tress.
