Uma Thurman has joined the ranks of celebrities who have saddled their offspring with unusual names, Entertainment Weekly reports. Following in the footsteps of “Apple,” “Suri,” “Bronx Mowgli” and others, Thurman reportedly named her new baby girl “Rosalind Arusha Arkadina Altalune Florence Thurman-Busson.”
A rep for Thurman gave a statement to People magazine saying the little girl is “better known to family and friends as Luna.”
Commenting on the long-form variation, Hillary Busis writes in EW.com’s PopWatch: “It’s so strange, so alliterative, and so long that I’m certain it has to qualify as the most unusual celebrity baby name of all time — even though there’s been plenty of competition.”
The baby was born July 15, but Thurman and her boyfriend, Arpad Busson, waited until now to reveal her name.
EW adds: “Here’s an explanation for those three ‘A’ names in the middle: Arusha is a city in Tanzania. Arkadina is the surname of a character in Anton Chekhov’s play ‘The Seagull.’ Altalune may be a variation on ‘alta luna,’ Italian for ‘high moon’ — and the name of a brand of wine.”
The EW report notes a number of other quirky celebrity baby names. Among them:
Memphis Eve and Elijah Bob Patricius Guggi Q, daughter and son of Bono
Petal Blossom Rainbow, daughter of Jamie Oliver
Pilot Inspektor, son of Jason Lee
Moxie Crimefighter and Zolten, daughter and son of Penn Jillette
Jermajesty, son of Jermaine Jackson
Seven Sirius, Puma Sabti, and Mars Merkaba, Andre Benjamin and Erykah Badu’s kids
Moon Unit, Dweezil, and Diva Thin Muffin Pigeen, three of Frank Zappa’s four children
I do believe the world owes Dave “Uma … Oprah” Letterman a long-deserved apology.
Zappa deserves the credit for being the original. All that follow pale in comparison.
