The big four broadcast networks finished in a tight four-network pack in the prime-time ratings race Wednesday night, based on Nielsen overnights.
TVbytheNumbers.com reports that Fox and ABC both finished with 2.8 average ratings for prime time in the key 18-49 demo, followed closely by CBS, with a 2.7 average, and NBC with a 2.5. CBS led total viewers with an average of 11.5 million, followed by Fox with 8.1 million, ABC with 8.0 million and NBC with 8.0 million.
Programming was generally rated higher than a week ago, when viewership was down for Thanksgiving Eve. The top show of the night was ABC’s “Modern Family” with a 4.7 average rating in viewers 18-49, up slightly from last week’s 4.6.
CBS was paced by “Criminal Minds” with a 2.9 in 18-49, up 7% from last week, while “Survivor: Philippines” turned in a 2.7, up 17%, and “CSI” delivered a 2.6, up 8%.
Special holiday programming did well, with NBC’s “Christmas in Rockefeller Center” scoring a four-year high with a 2.1 in viewers 18-49, 11% better than last year, while the network’s two-hour prime-time special “Saturday Night Live Christmas” brought in a 2.7. ABC’s repeat of “A Charlie Brown Christmas” delivered a 2.9, up 4% from last year.
Fox’s two-hour “The X Factor” came through with a 2.8 average in 18-49, up a hefty 27% from a week ago.
