The onetime Fox Saturday night staple “COPS” is marking its 20th anniversary as a syndicated strip, and Twentieth Television is marking the occasion by rolling out an updated version, “COPS Reloaded,” B&C reports.

The show has been cleared in 80% of the U.S. for a fall 2013 debut, the story reports.

Said Paul Franklin, executive VP and general sales manager, broadcast sales, for Twentieth: "It’s such an iconic brand, and after 20 years in syndication we felt there were a lot of things we could do to freshen up, re-energize, re-create the show, while still keeping the things that the ‘COPS’ viewers love about the show. Every episode will be re-edited. Different segments will have the best chases, funniest and wildest criminals, or the show’s craziest moments in the show, but it will retain that great ‘COPS’ storytelling."

B&C notes: “The show is sold in two-year deals to stations such as CBS-owned WLNY New York, KTXA Dallas, WUPA Atlanta, WBFS Minneapolis and WPCW Pittsburgh; Ellis-owned KDOC Los Angeles; Weigel’s WCIU Chicago; Tribune’s KCPQ/KZJO Seattle and KTXL Sacramento, as well as stations in the Sinclair, Gannett and Meredith Groups.”

John Langley, the show’s creator and executive producer, is bullish on the show’s future. "I think ‘COPS’ will be in syndication forever," he said. "’COPS’ performs extremely well in syndication and on basic cable. It’s always done well in off-net."

“COPS Reloaded,” from Langley Productions, is set to air in blocks of two half-hours in most markets, the piece notes.

  1. Will it still have that iconic theme song? (“Bad Boys”)

  2. Dang I hope so. Saturday nights have never been the same since FOX started messing with that time period. Dudes love COPS. Can’t wait for the re-boot.

  3. It still has the iconic theme song. I watched the reboot and I was impressed by what I saw.
