Sexist or Sexy? The Person Who Gained Instant Fame During Last Night’s BCS Championship Game (Hint: It Wasn’t a Football Player); Announcer Brent Musburger Is Slammed for His Remarks by Some Observers

It was instant fame for someone connected with the BCS Championship Game Monday night, Jan 7, 2013, but it wasn’t a football player.

From the moment Katherine Webb was shown during the game last night, until the end of the game, her number of followers on Twitter went from 530 to more than 90,000, reports the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

According to the story, “Cameras spotted [Alabama quarterback] A.J. McCarron’s girlfriend, Katherine Webb, in the stands and ESPN play-by-play announcer Brent Musburger, 73, suddenly became smitten.

“‘You quarterbacks, you get all the good-looking women,’ Musburger said. ‘What a beautiful woman.’

“‘Wow!’ analyst Kirk Herbstreit chimed in.

“‘If you’re a youngster in Alabama, start getting the football out and throw it around the backyard with Pop,’ Musberger added."

The story notes, “Among @_KatherineWebb new followers were Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray and Arizona Cardinals defensive lineman Darnell Docket, who tweeted his phone number to her.”

Musburger’s comments drew criticism from some quarters. Writes Kat Robinson at the blog She Knows Entertainment: "The issue here isn’t that Brent Musburger’s comments were overtly or explicitly offensive. They’re not. However, his decision to focus — to be captivated — by A.J. McCarron’s girlfriend’s attractiveness during the BCS National Championship makes Musburger seem creepy and his comments inappropriate. It’s likely embarrassing for ESPN and Musburger given his bad timing and apparent infatuation with Webb."

  1. Kat Robinson must not have been watching the game. Mr. Musburger’s comment was about both his girlfriend & his mom. That is why he said they get all the good looking women, since AJ has two in his life. He & Herbstreit talked about how unfair it is that quarterbacks are so lucky. I’m a female & thought it was cute, not creepy.

  2. Just another opportunity to display “Fake Outrage.”
