The NBC drama series "Dracula" has cast its Van Helsing. The Hollywood Reporter’s Live Feed reports that the role of the legendary monster hunter Abraham Van Helsing will go to "The River" actor Thomas Kretschmann.

The series is set in the 1890s and features Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Dracula, who is pretending to be an American businessman interested in bringing modern science to Victorian London, the story says.

In this version, which the story says has bypassed the traditional pilot stage, Van Helsing is a brilliant professor obsessed with revenge.

Kretschmann, who hails from Germany, is known for a series of film performances including the 1993 movie “Stalingrad” and the 2005 Peter Jackson remake of “King Kong.”

The project has also cast Oliver Jackson-Cohen of "Mr. Selfridge" as Jonathan Harker, a journalist who wants to climb in social status.
