‘American Idol’ Continues to Slide in Ratings — But So Does Everyone Else

Fox continues to rack up nightly ratings wins whenever it airs “American Idol,” even as the singing competition continues to see its numbers fall.

It happened again Wednesday night, based on Nielsen overnights for the key 18-49 demo. TVbytheNumbers.com reports that “Idol” was down two-tenths from last week, slipping to a 3.6 average rating in the demo. But Fox still easily won the night both in the demo and in total viewers.

Fox’s 3.6 average rating for prime time in the 18-49 demo placed it well ahead of CBS (2.0 average), Univision (1.5), ABC (1.2) and NBC (1.1). In total viewers, Fox’s 13.1 million easily outdistanced CBS’s 8.2 million, ABC’s 3.9 million, NBC’s 3.8 million and Univision’s 3.5 million.

Fox’s win was made easier by repeat programming on the other broadcast nets. NBC, ABC and CBS each aired only one fresh program.

CBS’s “Survivor: Caramoan” was the “best of the rest” behind “Idol,” with a 2.5 average in 18-49 — down one-tenth from a week ago.

ABC’s “The Neighbors” sank to a 1.4 in viewers 18-49, falling three-tenths from last week to an all-time low.

NBC saw “Whitney” dip one-tenth from a week earlier to a 1.2 average rating in the 18-49 demo.
