An Emmy Award-winning actress who was one of the most popular television stars of the 1970s confirms that she has been diagnosed with terminal brain cancer, People magazine reports.

Valerie Harper shot to fame as Rhoda Morgenstern on the CBS sitcom “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” and proved so popular that her character was spun off into Harper’s own show, “Rhoda.”

Harper, 73, reportedly received the news of her terminal diagnosis Jan. 15. Her exclusive interview is People’s cover story this week.

“A battery of tests revealed she has leptomeningeal carcinomatosis, a rare condition that occurs when cancer cells spread into the fluid-filled membrane surrounding the brain,” the story reports. “Her doctors say she has as little as three months left to live.”

Harper, who survived a fight with lung cancer in 2009, told People, "I don’t think of dying. I think of being here now."

Harper won four Emmys in the 1970s — three for "Mary Tyler Moore" and one for "Rhoda."

  1. No mention of “The Hogan Family” debacle.

  2. I had the opportunity to work with her a few times.
Kind, professional and a wonderful memory I have, (and will), carry with me.
