An actor who starred in a string of period-defining movies in the 1960s and 1970s — receiving an Academy Award nomination for “Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice” — has signed on with a new NBC comedy project.

Deadline.com reports that Elliott Gould, known for film roles including "M*A*S*H" and “The Long Goodbye,” along with appearances on NBC’s "Friends," will co-star opposite Martin Short in the NBC pilot from comedian John Mulaney.

As previously reported, Short was cast in the untitled NBC project to play Mulaney’s boss, Lou Cannon. His character is a game show host for whom Mulaney writes jokes.

Gould will play Mulaney’s character’s gay neighbor, Deadline notes. The multicamera project is written and executive produced by Mulaney and produced by "30 Rock’s” Robert Carlock.

  1. Elliott Gould is one of my favorite actors & I would watch anything that he is a part of.
This includes him just going up on stage and reading the phone book.
