Earlier today we ran a story from the Cleveland Plain Dealer newspaper about the local NBC affiliate there, WKYC-TV, pre-empting part of NBC’s Thrusday prime-time lineup recently to run a 21-year-old episode of "Matlock," starring Andy Griffith.

Brooke Spectorsky, the president and general manager of the station, had told the newspaper that part of the decision to run the "Matlock" was as a tribute to Griffith, who was snubbed in the in-memoriam portion of this year’s Oscars telecast.

However, it looks like B&C has got the real story.

According to a Michael Malone-penned article in B&C, Spectorsky "said the station typically runs a ‘Matlock’ special, where it gets all the inventory, in the first quarter. ‘We made a local decision,’ [Spectorsky] said. ‘We’ve done it the last 10 years and usually do quite well. Older folks appreciate ‘Matlock.’"

The B&C story adds: "Spectorsky said ‘Matlock: The Legacy,’ a ’92 film starring Andy Griffith, did a 2 household rating/3.3 share, rating a little less than a typical Thursday night of reruns on NBC, while beating repeats of ‘Scandal’ and a Jimmy Kimmel Oscar special on ABC in men 25-54."
