A+E Networks, known for original dramas such as "The Glades," is moving into comedy with a new pilot order. Deadline.com reports that the cable programmer has David Koechner of NBC’s “The Office” on board for "Whitey."
Koechner, who played Todd Packer on the long-running NBC show, will portray Guy "Whitey" White, “a bright, conservative and frustrated guy in his 40s who is struggling to understand the changing values of a country in a world that has forever gone with the wind,” Deadline reports. “Whitey graduated high school, married his high school sweetheart and spent his career working at the local engine factory until he got laid off. Now what?”
The project is being considered for History, although A+E will wait to see whether it’s picked up to series before deciding which network will get it. A&E and History are both known for original dramas, but "neither of them has taken a stab at half-hour scripted comedy," the story notes.
The pilot is from Leslie Greif, the producer of History’s successful miniseries "Hatfields & McCoys."
