New Programming and Graphics in the Forecast for Weather Channel

The Weather Channel is planning a big programming change this year, adding to its morning and daytime programs and its entertainment programming, reports TVNewser.

"Aside from the programming, the biggest change viewers will see is the graphics packages, which are being redesigned to be consistent across all of the Weather Company platforms, including Weather.com and the Weather app,” the story reports. “The new TV graphics bear a striking resemblance to the graphics found on the website and app. Local weather and information will always be on-screen, at least in the morning, when so many viewers tune in to the channel."

In prime time, where the network has been seeking to gain viewers, the Weather Channel will target the "weather enthusiast."

Said Weather Company CEO David Kenny: “The weather enthusiasts are 50 million strong, they are not a small group, they are really curious, they are really engaged, they over-index on weather … because they do stuff, and it helps them do stuff.”

New original series include "Secrets of the Earth," which will explore corners of the globe such as "canyons of gravity that warp space and time," and "Storm Warriors," which will look at how people survive extreme weather environments.

“Secrets of the Earth” is set to premiere May 23, with “Storm Warriors” due in August.

Also on tap: “Weather That Changed the World” (premiering June 6), “Strangest Weather on Earth” (September) and “Freaks of Nature” (September).

The following short-format Web series, which only have working titles at this point, are coming to weather.com: “Brink” (launching June 3), “The Bucket List” (July 1) and “The Explorers” (Aug. 5).

  1. If they really want to attract “weather enthusiasts” stop producing new series and get back to giving us detailed forecasts when we need them, though really it’s easier to get weather information online now.

  2. You’re So Right, Bill. They Have Really Destroyed The Network W/So Many JUNK Series. I Also Have Internet, But It’s A Real Pleasure To Be Able To View On TV.
