Oscars to Bring Back Producers of Controversial Show

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has decided who will produce the 2014 ceremony, and the choice may raise a few eyebrows. The academy said it’s bringing back Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, after this year’s show drew controversy but also attracted a bigger audience, reports the Los Angeles Times’ Movie Now.

"We believe that continuity is the most important thing. One of the problems we have every year is that you always have a new producer and a new host — there’s so much learning," said academy President Hawk Koch, whose one-year term will end this summer.

It’s usually the incoming president’s job to pick the show’s producers, meaning that the task would typically have fallen to the president who will be chosen this summer, the story points out. The decision to rehire Zadan and Meron was made with the support of the 43-member Board of Governors.

Some critics complained about host Seth MacFarlane’s jokes, calling them juvenile, such as the "We Saw Your Boobs" opening song. The article adds that it’s not clear whether MacFarlane will be asked back.

The 2013 telecast drew 40.3 million viewers, the best ratings for the show since 2010, and also attracted more younger viewers.
