An auction fetched the second-highest price ever paid for a bit of memorabilia from the original 1960s TV series “Star Trek.” A phaser rifle that was used by William Shatner in the show sold for $231,000, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The sale price trails only the $304,750 a collector paid for the captain’s chair in 2008, the piece notes.

The phaser rifle was designed by toy designer Reuben Klamer, who created the prop for Gene Roddenberry. It was seen in "Where No Man Has Gone Before," which was taped as the pilot but ended up as the third episode. It aired on Sept. 22, 1966.

In the episode, Captain Kirk uses the phaser rifle to kill an officer who has gained telepathic and telekinetic powers. After that episode, the rifle was replaced with the smaller, handgun-style phaser, the story says.
