In what some are calling the future of film, the effort to raise money for a “Veronica Mars” feature film has topped $5 million on the crowdsourcing site Kickstarter, Entertainmentwise reports.

The TV version, starring Kristen Bell, aired from 2004-2007 on UPN and CW. Show creator Rob Thomas took to Kickstarter to generate funding to revive the show as a movie.

After reaching the $5 million milestone, Thomas tweeted: "$5 MILLION! Holy Cow! This was my secret dream number that dare not speak its name. Thanks, everyone!"

Next up, Thomas is taking the effort to Comic-Con in San Diego in July.

He reportedly wrote in an email to his backers: "Even if we have an official panel at SDCC, we’re planning to pull out all the stops for our own exclusive event, so this is the one you’ll want to be at.”
