Most of the programming on the major broadcast networks Wednesday night was recycled, but fresh installments of Fox’s “American Idol” and CBS’s “Survivor” waged a battle for supremacy in the 8 p.m. hour before CBS dipped into its bag of repeat programming starting at 9 p.m.
Based on Nielsen overnights, “Idol” was the winner in the key 18-49 demo. TVbytheNumbers.com reports that the two-hour singing competition delivered a 3.3 average, powering Fox to an easy win for prime time overall. “Idol” was up 3% in the demo from last week.
“Survivor” equaled last week’s 2.6 average in 18-49 as CBS settled for second place overall.
ABC’s “Suburgatory” wrapped up its season on a less-than-spectacular note with back-to-back episodes that produced a 1.5 average in viewers 18-49 for the 8 p.m. edition — equaling the series’ all-time low — followed by a slightly better but still ho-hum 1.7 for the season finale at 8:30. That number was 25% below what “The Middle” delivered last week in the time slot.
ABC also ran a fresh episode of “How to Live With Your Parents” at 9:30 and was rewarded with a 2.0 in the 18-49 demo, down 20% from last week.
NBC’s only original program was an hour of “Dateline” at 8 p.m., which trailed the competition with a 1.2 average in 18-49, equaling the show’s number from a week ago.
For prime time overall, Fox led the way with its 3.3 average in adults 18-49, followed by CBS (1.8 average), Univision (1.6), ABC (1.5) and NBC (1.1). Fox also had a comfortable lead in total viewers, averaging 12.4 million to CBS’s 7.7 million, ABC’s 4.8 million, NBC’s 4.4 million and Univision’s 3.7 million.
