All-Time Lows Across the Board for CBS Prime-Time Lineup; ABC Has Its Worst Comedy Premiere Ever

CBS’s entire prime-time lineup sank to series lows Wednesday night in the key 18-49 demo, based on Nielsen overnights. TVbytheNumbers.com reports that “Survivor,” “Criminal Minds” and “CSI” all fell to all-time lows in the demo.

“Survivor” kicked off prime time with a 2.3 average in viewers 18-49, losing 21% from last week. “Criminal Minds” also delivered a 2.3, also slipping 21% from its previous original. Finally, “CSI” sank to a 1.8, off 25% from its previous original.

CBS still had enough for a second-place finish for prime time overall, behind Fox, which had its own ratings problems. Fox’s two-hour “American Idol” lost 15% from a week ago, settling for a 2.8 average in 18-49, an all-time low for a Wednesday installment of the series.

The top show of the night was ABC’s “Modern Family,” which dipped 8% from its previous original episode to a 3.5 average in the 18-49 demo. The bad news for ABC was a weak series premiere for its new comedy “Family Tools,” which managed only a 1.5. That made it ABC’s lowest-rated comedy premiere ever, and was 26% below the time slot premiere of “The Neighbors” back in October.

ABC’s “The Middle” held its own with a 2.0 in 18-49, equaling its previous original, while “How to Live With Your Parents” was one of only a few broadcast programs to see an increase, surging 47% from last week to a 1.5. “Nashville” dipped 6% from its previous original to a 1.7 rating.

Fourth-place NBC squeezed a 1.6 average out of a clip show for “The Voice” in viewers 18-49, a 19% improvement on what “Dateline” delivered last week in the time slot. “Law & Order: SVU” slumped 21% to a 1.5, while “Chicago Fire” climbed 6% from its previous original to a 1.7.

For prime time overall, Fox’s 2.8 average led the way in the 18-49 demo, followed by CBS (2.2 average), ABC (2.1) and NBC (1.6), which beat out Univision (1.4). Fox led total viewers with 11.1 million to CBS’s 9.4 million, ABC’s 6.6 million, NBC’s 5.9 million and Univision’s 3.4 million.
