The Elmo puppeteer who left "Sesame Street" after allegations surfaced that he had sexual relations with minors has received a Daytime Emmy nomination for his work on the show, reports The New York Times.
The nod for Kevin Clash took some by surprise, although he worked on the show during the award-eligible season, the piece points out. He is the recipient of 23 Daytime Emmy Awards, including some for the show and others for his individual work.
He was nominated Wednesday for outstanding performer in a children’s series, and is included in the show’s nod for outstanding preschool children’s series. Competing against him in the individual category are two other "Sesame Street" performers, Joey Mazzarino and David Rudman, and Jeff Corwin from "Ocean Mysteries."
Clash’s attorney said the performer "wants to return to work in the industry he’s committed his entire life to," according to The Times.
The category in which Kevin Clash has been nominated will shortly be renamed the Roman Polanski Award for Excellence in Hidden Messaging and Alternative Agendas in Children’s Programming.
