A veteran Fox reality series opened its new season on a down note Tuesday night, based on Nielsen overnights for the key 18-49 demo. TVbytheNumbers.com reports that the one-hour season premiere of “So You Think You Can Dance” settled for a 1.9 average, down from a 2.4 for last year’s premiere and a 2.2 in the 8-9 p.m. hour last year.

For the night, Fox came in a distant third in the key demo, and fourth in total viewers. Both “New Girl” and “The Mindy Project” equaled last week’s numbers — a 2.1 in 18-49 for “New Girl” and a 1.3 for “Mindy.”

Winning the night was NBC, by a slim margin over CBS. NBC’s “The Voice” was the top show of the night in viewers 18-49 with a 3.4 average, despite losing three-tenths from a week ago. “Grimm” ticked down one-tenth to a 1.7. NBC opened prime time with a repeat of “The Voice” (2.0 average).

CBS got solid performances from most of its drama lineup, with “NCIS” rising one-tenth in 18-49 from a week ago to a 3.2, “NCIS: Los Angeles” up one-tenth to a 2.5 and “Golden Boy” holding steady with a 1.2.

Fourth-place ABC couldn’t get much traction, with “Wipeout” equaling its all-time low with a 1.1 in adults 18-49 and “Body of Proof” matching its 1.4 from a week ago. “Dancing with the Stars” climbed one-tenth to a 1.8.

For prime time overall, NBC’s 2.4 average was the best in the 18-49 demo, followed by CBS (2.3 average), Fox (1.8) and ABC (1.4). CBS ran away with total viewers, averaging 12.9 million for the night to 8.2 million for ABC, 7.4 million for NBC and 4.2 million for Fox.
