Historically Bad Ratings for Reality Show’s Finale

A major broadcast reality series chalked up the worst ratings in its history for a season finale Tuesday night, based on Nielsen overnights for the key 18-49 demo. TVbytheNumbers.com reports that ABC’s two-hour “Dancing with the Stars” finale generated a 2.6 average rating in the demo, losing 21% from last year’s finale.

However, the number was up 44% from what the show delivered last week. And ABC managed a second-place finish for the night behind NBC, even with ABC’s “The Bachelor’s Funniest Moments” pulling only a 1.2 in viewers 18-49.

NBC was paced by “The Voice,” which slipped 11% from last week to settle for a 3.1 in the 18-49 demo, the show’s lowest-rated Tuesday installment of the season. NBC got a 2.0 out of its news special “Devastation in Oklahoma,” the only one of the Big Four broadcasters to run a prime-time special on the tornado disaster.

NBC’s season finale of “Grimm” was up 6% from the finale a year ago, delivering a 1.7 in adults 18-49, matching last week’s number.

Fox’s two-hour “So You Think You Can Dance” was good enough for third place on a night when CBS aired all-repeat programming. “Dance” delivered a 1.9 in the 18-49 demo, matching the number for last week’s one-hour premiere.

CBS aired repeats of “NCIS: Los Angeles” (1.3 average in 18-49) and two episodes of “NCIS” (1.3 and 1.4).

For prime time overall, NBC led the way with a 2.3 average in viewers 18-49, followed by ABC (2.1 average), Fox (1.9), Univision (1.4) and CBS (1.3). ABC pulled ahead in total viewers, averaging 11.5 million to lead NBC (7.8 million), CBS (7.5 million), Fox (4.6 million) and Univision (3.5 million).
