Long-Delayed Fox Series Finally Debuts — to Feeble Numbers

Fox and ABC both rolled out new prime-time series Monday night, and neither program made much of a splash. But as bad as the debut for ABC’s “Motive” was, Fox’s new comedy “The Goodwin Games” fared even worse — a lot worse — based on Nielsen overnights.

Bowing on a night of otherwise all-repeat programming on Fox, “Goodwin,” which premiered after a significant delay, delivered a shockingly low 0.7 average in the key 18-49 demo, TVbytheNumbers.com reports. The rest of Fox’s prime time consisted of repeats of “Raising Hope,” “New Girl” and “The Mindy Project,” with everything delivering 0.6 or 0.7 averages.

Perhaps even more stunning, “Goodwin Games” mustered a mere 1.748 million total viewers. By comparison, the rollout for ABC’s drama series “Motive” was a juggernaut, delivering a total audience of 6.83 million and a 1.4 average in 18-49. But that was a fraction of the audience delivered by ABC’s only other show of the night, a two-hour “Dancing with the Stars,” which managed a 2.5 in the 18-49 demo and 14.73 million total viewers.

At the upper end of the ratings spectrum, NBC’s two-hour “The Voice” was the top show of the night with a 3.4 average in adults 18-49, as NBC won the night in the demo. The bad news: “The Voice” was down 11% from last week, yielding a Monday low for the series and a season low for a performance show.

NBC’s “Revolution” held its own, matching last week’s 1.9 in viewers 18-49.

CBS put up a mix of repeats and finales, with the series finale of “Rules of Engagement” slipping 14% from its previous original to a 1.8 while the season finale of “Hawaii Five-0” came through with a 2.0, rising 11% from last week but losing 26% from the previous season finale.

The numbers for prime time overall show NBC at No. 1 in the 18-49 demo with a 2.9 average, followed by ABC (2.1 average), CBS (1.9), Univision (1.5) and Fox (0.6). ABC claimed the top spot in total viewers with 12.1 million, followed by NBC (9.0 million), CBS (7.5 million), Univision (3.8 million) and Fox (1.6 million).
