Nielsen Changes Its Definition of the TV Universe — and This Means the Universe Is About to Get Bigger

Nielsen revealed how much the universe of U.S. television homes will increase with the TV measurement company’s expanded definition of a TV household. The Los Angeles Times reports that the size of the TV universe will rise by 1.2% with Nielsen shifting its focus to include thousands of dwellings that watch via a high-speed Internet connection.

The new definition will go into effect in September, and will increase the number of TV homes to 115.6 million — up from 114.2 in the current TV season. Homes qualify as part of the TV universe if they have a high-speed Internet connection and at least one TV monitor with the ability to deliver video, the piece notes.

Final estimates of the new TV universe will be released in late summer, before the 2013-14 TV season begins.
