"Anne Rice, the author of ‘Interview With the Vampire’ and two books about the life of Jesus Christ, had never heard of celebrity chef Paula Deen until last Friday, but she believes the TV personality is being ‘crucified,’ reports the Los Angeles Times.

The story continues, "Rice wrote a brief defense of Deen on her Facebook page on Friday, then engaged in further discussion with her fans, many of whom wrote to express their dismay that Rice would defend the chef."

The article says that Rice wrote, "I never heard of her until today, and wow, this looks like a crucifixion. I may be wrong but aren’t we becoming something of a lynch mob culture?"

The story adds, "When an African American educator from the South wrote to share her disappointment that Rice would be a defender of Deen, the author didn’t back down. ‘I’m sorry to disappoint you but I think she’s being crucified,’ [Rice] wrote. ‘The lawsuit is ugly all right, and the brother of Paula Dean comes off as a detestable person. But I don’t think Paula Deen should go down over this. I think it’s unfair.’ "

According to her website, Rice was born in New Orleans in 1941 and lived there for 17 years before moving to Texas. From 1962 to 1988 she lived in the San Francisco Bay Area, and then moved back to New Orleans. She returned to California in 2005.

  1. Maybe it’s just the old journalist in me but what purpose did that last paragraph serve? The areas Anne Rice has lived in hs nothing to do with her opinion on Paula Deen. I’m no fan of Deen but I agree with Rice that we’re becoming a lynch mob culture (I’ll go one step further and say that we’ve already become a lynch mob culture). Some of her treatment from pontificating jackasses – many of whom should just glad nobody has found out about their own fetishes for auto erotic asphyxiation and teenage tranny hookers – has been reprehensible.

  2. Politically Correctness must have it’s pound of flesh.

  3. Next time we are looking for someone without sin that can cast the first stone, it looks like we’ve found multiple volunteers. Christ just lived too soon. Today we have a lot of people that are without sin and would be willing to cast, not only the first stone, but multiple stones thereafter. Sure wish I was a perfect as they are.

  4. I would venture to say that 95% of white Americans over the age of 45 have used the “N” word at some time in their lives. That doesn’t justify anything but its a fact of life. Blacks have several derogatory words for whites. My parents would not allow that word spoken in their home when I was a child but it didn’t stop me from using it among my friends since they were all using it. I have been called cracker, whitey, white bread, etc. to my face. Paula Dean did not lie. In this country at this time it seem that lies are a way of life. She was honest. All the stores and sponsers that refuse to do business with her are on my avoidance list. If they won’t do business with Paula, I won’t do business with them. Paula did no more or less than the vast majority of folks in this country, regardless of their cultural affiliation.
