Oprah’s Back on Top: Winfrey Reclaims a Title She Held in the Past Before Losing It for a Couple of Years

We don’t know whether Oprah Winfrey pays attention to these things, but word comes today that she is back on top of the Forbes Celebrity 100, which ranks the most powerful celebrities.

Forbes took the wraps off the list today, and after two years at No. 2, Winfrey is back in the spot that she owned in previous years: No. 1.

“Winfrey remains a powerful force in Hollywood,” Forbes reports. “Her Oprah Winfrey Network, once a drifting cable outpost that lost an estimated $330 million for parent company Discovery between 2008 and the end of 2012, is now a smoothish-running media machine that could turn a profit by the end of 2013.”

The list is based not on earnings or net worth, the basis of other Forbes lists, but on a combination of factors including fame and marketability. This year’s Top 10 is dominated by women.

“Even without her eponymous daytime talk show, Winfrey made an estimated $77 million between June 2012 and June 2013, down from last year’s $165 million,” Forbes reports. “While she wasn’t the highest earner on our list, her money, mixed with strong fame scores in metrics like press mentions and social networking power, pushed her to the top.”

Coming in at No. 2 on the list is Lady Gaga, followed by Steven Spielberg at No. 3. Rounding out the top five are Beyonce Knowles at No. 4 and Madonna at No. 5.

The rest of the Top 10 consists of Taylor Swift at No. 6, Bon Jovi at No. 7, Roger Federer at No. 8, Justin Bieber at No. 9 and Ellen DeGeneres at No. 10.

Jennifer Lopez, who topped last year’s list, fell to No. 12 this time around.

  1. There are four men in the top 10. That is not domination by women. That is only one from being a tie of 5 each.
