Actor Rhys Ifans, known for his work in feature films including "Notting Hill" and "The Amazing Spider-Man," is joining the cast of the CBS drama series "Elementary" in a recurring role. EW.com’s Inside TV reports that the Welsh actor will play Mycroft Holmes, the older brother of detective Sherlock Holmes.

Ifans will first appear in the premiere of the show’s second season, which will be shot in England and will air Sept. 26. The episode will feature Sherlock and Joan traveling to London to stay with his older brother, with whom he has had a falling out, while they pursue a case.

Ifans portrayed Dr. Curt Connors/The Lizard in "The Amazing Spider-Man" and the messy roommate Spike in the comedy "Notting Hill." A member of the rock group Super Furry Animals, Ifans is also known for playing Nigel Gruff in "The Replacements."
