Rupert Murdoch Files for Divorce From Wendi Deng Murdoch

News Corp. Chairman Rupert Murdoch filed for divorce Thursday from wife Wendi Deng Murdoch, reports Nikki Finke at Deadline.com.

The pair met in 1997 at a News Corp. party in Hong Kong, where Deng Murdoch worked at his Star Television unit. The pair married two years later on his yacht in New York harbor, just a month after he divorced Anna Maria Torv Murdoch.

That divorce cost Murdoch $1.7 billion in a settlement with his ex-wife, after the pair had been married for 30 years, the story notes. The pending divorce from Deng Murdoch isn’t expected to impact Murdoch’s holdings, and was announced to provide transparency before News Corp. spins off its publishing assets later this month.

The couple have been living apart for six months, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Earlier in their marriage, the couple moved into a $7 million loft in Manhattan’s Soho neighborhood, and then added homes around the world, including another New York residence (a $44 million penthouse on Fifth Avenue) and homes in London, Australia and Los Angeles.

The pair have two children, Grace Helen Murdoch, born in 2001, and Chloe Murdoch, who was born two years later.

Deng Murdoch grabbed headlines in 2011 when she launched herself at Jonnie Marbles, a prankster who was trying to throw a cream pie at her husband, who was at the House of Commons to testify in his company’s tabloid phone-tapping scandal.

The couple signed a prenup that gives Deng Murdoch cash and property, but no control of News Corp. or its units, the story notes.

  1. Of course one has to wonder how did these two who are in their own right magic pieces of work (and not magic in the benign Sunday afternoon charming way) finally come to implode and grate on each other…?
Then again perhaps the right question might be why did it take so long in the first place….?
And then there are the yummy theories that led to the break up too…

  2. Hey, Rupert, this song wasn’t actually designed with you in mind, but if you substitute “caviar” for “hot dogs” and “Henri IV Dudognon Heritage Cognac Grande Champagne” for “beer,” it just might work. It’s called “Running Out,” by the American blues-rock artist Biff Thuringer. He used to like Chinese girls too! Enjoy!
