A TNT drama series returned for its sophomore season with lower viewer numbers. Deadline.com reports that Monday’s season premiere of the police procedural “Major Crimes” delivered about 5 million viewers, down from the 7.2 million people who tuned in for the show’s debut in August.

"Major Crimes" had the benefit last year of debuting right after the series finale of "The Closer," which ended its run with 9.1 million viewers. But even with its lower-rated season opener Monday, "Major Crimes" ranks as the top scripted show on basic cable for the year among returning programs, the story points out.

"Major Crimes" stars Mary McDonnell as as the head of the LAPD’s Major Crimes Division.

Leading out from “Major Crimes,” the new TNT drama “King and Maxwell” premiered to 3.5 million total viewers.
