Al Jazeera America, which is readying for its launch next month, announced the hiring of a veteran of TV news operations including CNN, CBS News and ABC News. The channel named Sheila MacVicar as a correspondent for the prime-time current affairs newsmagazine "America Tonight."

"MacVicar, who will be based in Al Jazeera America’s Washington, D.C., bureau, will contribute to ‘America Tonight’s’ daily segments on the economy, international affairs, government, education, healthcare and the environment," the network announced. "MacVicar will join previously announced correspondents Adam May, Lori Jane Gliha and Christof Putzel, and special correspondent Soledad O’Brien."

Kim Bondy, executive producer for "America Tonight," said in the announcement: “Sheila MacVicar is an exceptional, veteran journalist who throughout her career has reported unbiased, fact-based stories. Sheila will bring more than 30 years of reporting experience, especially her ability to engage viewers on the issues that will most affect their lives, to America Tonight’s viewers.”

MacVicar has been a regular winner of news awards, with three Emmy Awards, an Edward R. Murrow award and a George Foster Peabody Award among her accolades. "She was a founding member of CNN’s post-9/11 award-winning investigative team and has extensive experience living in and reporting from conflict areas and regions with humanitarian crises, including the Balkans, Middle East, Southeast Asia and Africa," Al Jazeera America noted.

MacVicar offered this comment in the announcement: “Al Jazeera America will be a channel committed to in-depth reporting that focuses on the human side of the story rather than on celebrities and statistics. That’s what I have done throughout my career and something I am truly looking forward to continuing to do here.”

MacVicar, who hails from Canada, most recently was international correspondent for CBS News.
