A correspondent for NBC’s recently wrapped "Rock Center," whose resume also includes a long stint at CBS News, has his sights set on a possible move to cable. TVNewser.com reports that Harry Smith may be joining CNBC, with the cable network in talks to hire the longtime morning newsman.

"Rock Center" aired its final broadcast on NBC last month, the story notes. Smith spent 25 years at CBS News, including stints on "The Early Show" and "CBS This Morning." He also contributed to "CBS Evening News with Dan Rather," "48 Hours" and other CBS News productions before leaving the network in 2011.

More recently he has reported for NBC News shows and filled in for Brian Williams on "Nightly News."

A CNBC representative said, "Harry Smith is one of the truly great TV journalists and fortunately already a member of the NBCUniversal News Group, so if we could figure out a way to utilize his skills to serve our viewers and users I’m sure we’d be interested.”
