Doctors Seek to Keep Amanda Bynes Institutionalized as a Theory Surfaces About What’s Wrong With Her

Doctors are seeking to extend the 5150 psychiatric hold on actress Amanda Bynes, with the initial hold only sufficient to keep the troubled 27-year-old in lockdown for 72 hours, TMZ.com reports.

As we reported previously, Bynes was held for psychological evaluation after an incident Monday in Thousand Oaks, Calif., in which she started a fire in a residential driveway — and spilled gasoline on her dog in the process.

The latest theory about what’s going on with Bynes focuses on possible schizophrenia, with TMZ reporting that she’s exhibiting signs of the disorder.

The website reports: "Medical professionals and others will seek a 2-week extension on her 5150 psychiatric hold so doctors can properly diagnose her … sources familiar with the situation tell TMZ."

The report adds: "People close to Bynes are convinced she’s suffering from mental illness, specifically schizophrenia."

The driveway incident may be the tipping point for efforts by those close to Bynes to help the former Nickelodeon star.

"Sources tell us … Amanda’s parents will now ask a judge to put the 27-year-old in a conservatorship, a la Britney Spears, because they believe she is unable to care for herself and could be a danger to others," TMZ reports. "Amanda’s parents have wanted to take action for the past couple of months — but they didn’t have the goods because Amanda’s conduct was not so over the line that a judge would take away her freedom."

Bynes will not be charged with a crime in connection with the latest incident, TMZ reports separately. However, she still faces a number of legal issues, including DUI charges in Los Angeles and reckless endangerment and marijuana charges in New York City, the piece notes.

  1. Amazing how we can get mental health help for this person of noteriety and privledge. How about the thousands of vets with PTSD that are locked away or homeless even though it was caused by their own governments screw ups.

  2. I do not totally agree with you. There is help for Veterans, more help than for civilians. The problem is that no one is educating people in the service. Preparing them for transitioning back in to civilian life.
Yes, I have worked with veterans on their recovery from addiction and they also attend intensive in and out patient at the VA.
EDUCATION. Preparation. Communication. Our veterans deserve more than what they are getting after serving our country.
Again, more help is afforded them than the average person. They just need to be informed…

  3. Although I completely agree with your view, I also have a very close relative that is a psychiatrist for the VA. He is forced to go home after 60 hrs and still has a crushing workload that is growing by the day. These men and women can get the help if they are willing and able to wait and then wait some more. Many have been ending their lives before the can be seen while others “flip out” and disappear.

  4. She’s been a talented actress all this time without the warning signs… She needs to get honest. Get off the drugs. I remember those episodes clearly….we can recognize the behavior, the chaos and the insanity.

  5. @tim no matter who it is, war veteran or “privileged” star, mental health issues are debilitating. No one deserves help more than anyone else, because everyone that is suffering feels the pain in their own way. No one deserves to have schizophrenia, just as no one deserves to have PTSD.
