‘Sherlock’ Casts New Villain

"Sherlock" has cast a foil for title detective Sherlock Holmes for the upcoming season of the show. The Hollywood Reporter’s Live Feed reports that the British series tapped "Borgen" star Lars Mikkelsen as Charles Augustus Magnussen.

The report cites a Twitter comment from producer Sue Vertue.

Mikkelsen is the brother of "Hannibal" star Mads Mikkelsen, the story notes. "Sherlock," which airs in the U.S. as part of PBS’s "Masterpiece," will return for its third season in 2014.

It’s possible that Magnussen is based on the character Charles Augustus Milverton, who appeared in a 1904 short story called "The Adventure of Charles August Milverton" by author Arthur Conan Doyle. The character is described by Sherlock Holmes as "the worst man in London" and "the king of all the blackmailers."

  1. I like Mikkelsen but I still hope there’s some way they can bring Moriarty back, at least briefly. I can’t remember at the moment if the character showed up in any of the original stories after “Reichenbach Falls” but that probably wouldn’t stop Gatiss & Moffat.
