Hot Ticket: Denzel Washington to Star With TV Legend on Broadway

Denzel Washington, who has won two Academy Awards and a Tony, will be back on Broadway in the spring with a legendary TV star in a play that’s sure to become a hot ticket.

Joining Washington will be Diahann Carroll "in her first Broadway appearance in over 30 years," reports The New York Times.

The play is a revival of Lorraine Hansberry’s 1959 classic, "A Raisin in the Sun."

Washington will play Walter Lee Younger and Carroll " will play Lena, the Younger family matriarch," the story says.

Back in 1968, Carroll broke ground playing the title character in "Julia," a nurse, when there were very few African Americans as positive role models on TV.  Carroll won a Golden Globe Award for "Julia."

Since that time Carroll has been on lots of other TV shows, perhaps most memorably as Dominique Deveraux on "Dynasty."

In 1962 Carroll won the Tony as Best Actress in the musical "No Strings."

This Broadway revival of "Raisin in the Sun" begins with previews on March 8, 2014, at the Barrymore Theater. Opening night is schduled for April 3, 2014. The play is scheduled for a limited 14-week run that will end on June 15, 2014.

  1. Glad Denzel is coming back to Broadway.
But “A Raisin in the Sun”? Seriously? It’s a great play, sure, but Sean Combs starred in a revival just a few seasons back. Surely there must be other plays out there. And why a revival? Take a page from Tom Hanks and do something new and original. God knows new plays don’t get much of a chance on Broadway.
