Katie Couric sought to tamp down a brewing social-media feud sparked by a comment Couric made to In Touch Weekly that questioned why the Kardashians are so popular, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

"I don’t understand — why are they so famous? I think it’s mostly teenage girls that are interested," Couric said to In Touch, according to the report.

Kardashian responded by posting a photo of a congratulatory note sent by Couric on the birth of Kardashian’s baby, along with the hashtags, "#IHateFakeMediaFriends #MayIHumblySuggestYouNotSendGiftsThenTalkS–t."

Couric replied in a statement that she was just answering a question that was posed by a reporter, and hadn’t meant to hurt Kim’s feelings.

"I was responding to a reporter’s question, and explaining how I’m intrigued by the public’s fascination with her family. I didn’t mean to hurt her feelings. The gift is genuine, and I’m happy for Kim and Kanye," she said.
