Miley Cyrus’ VMA Performance Draws a Predictable Rebuke From Media Watchdog Group — But There’s a Twist

The Parents Television Council is known for criticizing shows that offer explicit content, so it’s not surprising that the group condemned Miley Cyrus’ performance at MTV’s Video Music Awards. But there’s another reason to take notice of the complaint, reports The New York Times’ Arts Beat.

Cyrus’ father, Billy Ray Cyrus, is on the group’s advisory board, the article points out.

Billy Ray Cyrus didn’t respond to requests for comment, but the country singer did write on Twitter what may be interpreted as a response to the mixed reaction to his daughter’s rump-shaking performance. "Thanking God for so many blessings tonight. Continue to pray for world peace. More love … less hate," he wrote.

While the MTV program was rated TV-14, meaning that the show would contain material inappropriate for kids under 14, the PTC argued that the network should have warned parents about allowing 14-year-olds to watch it without supervision, the story adds.

“MTV continues to sexually exploit young women by promoting acts that incorporate ‘twerking’ in a nude-colored bikini. How is this image of former child star Miley Cyrus appropriate for 14-year-olds?” PTC spokesman Dan Isett said in a statement.

A spokeswoman for MTV said the network didn’t have comment on the criticism.

  1. And now, ladies and gentlemen, we watch yet another child star begin the downward slide….

  2. For a moment, I envisioned a rash of male PTC office staff engaging in fistfights over who gets to watch the VMA.

  3. IF Ms. Cyrus surprised the producers & director with her “Doggy Style” act as it was happening, then where was their discretionary shooting around her “act”, or better, going to commercial and pulling her off the stage?
Poor taste is poor taste. There were many levels to deal with her on the spot. None were taken.
She and her “people” are at the top the list of responsibility. Many follow behind them.
I could not care less what happens between two, or thirty consenting adults.
There is a time and a place for everything. This was NOT the time or the place for her crap.
I’m sure those marketing idiots who will market anything think this was a “coup”.
    It was not…it was C R A P.

  4. Good for Miley. She accomplished exactly what she wanted. She is the hottest thing on social media and downloads of her music are moving fast. Everyone wants her to stay a teen, but she wants to grow up. MTV saw the rehearsals, they knew what was going on and they didn’t edit around it.

  5. You’re right Digital Guy. In this day and age do everything that has an immediate response. Never worry about the long term ramifications or what innocence you are corrupting in the TV audience. Interesting that in years past it would generally take longer for a “talent” to degrade into being a slutty pole dancer. This really is the high speed digital age.
