CBS has a new drama series in the works, and it’s a spinoff of one of the network’s popular current series. Writing on Deadline.com, Nellie Andreeva reports that actor Mark Harmon is working on a spinoff of "NCIS."

Harmon stars as Special Agent Gibbs on "NCIS," which is still going strong after 10 seasons. Harmon will executive produce the new project along with "NCIS" executive producer and showrunner Gary Glasberg.

The new show is expected to be introduced as a two-part "NCIS" episode in the spring, Andreeva reports.

"The character-driven project, written by Glasberg and produced by CBS Studios, centers on the the NCIS New Orleans office, which handles cases from Pensacola through Mississippi and Louisiana to the Texas panhandle," Andreeva writes.

New Orleans was chosen as the setting because of its history of music and partying, which lures military personnel who are on leave, the piece notes.

The project would be the show’s second spinoff, following the successful "NCIS: Los Angeles," which also started as a backdoor pilot.

  1. What about “NCIS:Red with John Corbett” that aired last season? Anopther back-door pilot that didn’t make it.

  2. Is NCIS the only series that began as a backdoor pilot (as episodes of JAG) to have its own backdoor pilots picked up as series?
