The actor who plays Bilbo Baggins in Peter Jackson’s film trilogy "The Hobbit" and Dr. Watson in the BBC/PBS series "Sherlock" has signed on for another high-profile role.

The Hollywood Reporter’s Live Feed reports that English actor Martin Freeman has been cast as the leading man in the FX adaptation of Joel and Ethan Coen’s "Fargo." Freeman will play Lester Nygaard, the character portrayed by William H. Macy in the 1996 movie.

The 10-episode limited series will track a "true crime" story, with the same Minnesota flavor and humor of the original movie, the story says.

Noah Hawley is writing the script and executive producing, while the Coen brothers are also executive producing, along with Warren Littlefield and Geyer Kosinski. Adam Bernstein of "30 Rock" will direct the pilot.

The indie movie "Fargo" was a sensation at the Oscars in 1997, receiving seven Academy Award nominations — including for best picture — and winning trophies for Frances McDormand for best actress and the Coen Brothers, Ethan and Joel, for best original screenplay.
