Oscar-Winning Director Headed Back to TV

Fox has given a put pilot commitment to a project that will mark the return to television for an Oscar-winning director.

Deadline.com reports that the project comes from director, producer and screenwriter Robert Zemeckis — known for "Forrest Gump," "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" and the "Back to the Future" movies, among many others — and the creator of A&E’s "The Glades," Clifton Campbell.

Called "Billy Ray," the drama project is about a family whose missing child returns 16 years later, after being raised in Alabama by someone with an iffy background, the story says. Campbell and Zemeckis are executive producing, although no studio is on board yet.

The project would mark Zemeckis’ first series in more than 15 years — he executive produced HBO’s short-lived "Perversions of Science" in 1997 — and his first directing job for a series since he worked on the HBO anthology "Tales From the Crypt" in 1995.

Zemeckis, whose feature directing credits also include "Contact," "Cast Away" and "Romancing the Stone," won the Academy Award for best director for "Forrest Gump" in 1995.
