Cable news ratings leader Fox News Channel may have a new star in its prime-time lineup. The Hollywood Reporter’s Live Feed reports that Megyn Kelly, a transplant from the channel’s daytime lineup, improved 116% Tuesday night from her premiere Monday — topping even Bill O’Reilly’s numbers and leading all of cable news for the night.

"Chalk it up to the benefits of exposure or the unpredictable nature of cable news, but Fox News Channel’s ‘The Kelly File’ more than doubled its demo haul on its second night," THR reports. "Megyn Kelly’s new prime-time show jumped 38 percent with total viewers to 2.8 million and a whopping 116 percent among adults 25-54 to 623,000. The numbers not only bested combined competition from CNN’s Piers Morgan and MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow, Kelly also scored the rare distinction of topping lead-in and reigning cable news champ Bill O’Reilly in the key demographic — by about 45,000 viewers."

The report adds: "For the night, Fox News averaged 2.43 million viewers and 508,949 adults 25-54. Closest competition MSNBC, which scored key demo wins on Monday in all hours but 8 p.m., averaged 958,420 viewers and 264,277 adults 25-54. Third-place CNN posted 577,591 viewers and 173,321 adults."

Fox’s Sean Hannity, who was shuffled to 10 p.m. as part of the Megyn Kelly reconfiguration, also did better Tuesday night. "The pundit averaged 2.17 million viewers and 517,047 demo viewers, also topping CNN and MSNBC competition combined," THR reports. "At 7 p.m. Greta Van Susteren was also up from the night before, edging out Chris Matthews in the demo with 317,401 adults 25-54 and topping the hour with 1.81 million viewers."

The report cautions that the early numbers may not be indicative of a trend for the new lineup, with the substantial fluctuation between Monday and Tuesday being one indication of the ratings volatility.

  1. How sad that a bright young talent like Megyn Kelly would join a network of right wing nutjobs like Sean Hannity and Bill OReilly. Then again, the Nazis also had members from many different age groups and backgrounds. And people often put paychecks ahead of principles.

  2. How sad that in America we still have people who don’t like free speech. Leaning a little bit to the right doesn’t make you a Nazi!

  3. How sad that news isn’t news anymore when we had the likes of Cronkite. Everything has a slant one way or another, and God knows, FOX is the worst.
