A North Carolina Republican precinct chairman and GOP Executive Committee member resigned from his position with the party following an interview with “The Daily Show’s" Aasif Mandvi in which he made some racially charged comments, The Hollywood Reporter’s Live Feed reports.

Don Yelton complained during the interview about “lazy black people that wants the government to give them everything." He also admitted that he has been called a bigot, but added that one of his best friends is black, the story says.

Yelton was asked to resign, according to WRAL. Buncombe County Republican Party Chairman Henry Mitchell described Yelton’s comments as “offensive, uninformed and unacceptable of any member within the Republican Party."

“Let me make it very clear: Mr. Yelton’s comments do not reflect the belief or feelings of Buncombe Republicans, nor do they mirror any core principle that our party is founded upon," Mitchell said in a statement.

During the “Daily Show” interview, Yelton defended the state’s voter ID law, saying that it wasn’t meant to hurt black people but instead is intended to hamper the Democrats.

THR adds: “Yelton also noted that while Mandvi, who is Indian-American, looks different than he does, he treated the ‘Daily Show’ correspondent just like anyone else.”

Mandvi, at one point in the interview, asked Yelton, “You realize we can hear you?”

  1. God bless The Daily Show for exposing this country’s politcs and news media as the lying, incompetent, depressing cesspools that they are…all while making me laugh hysterically.
