NBC Cancels Two of Its Fall Series

NBC has canceled two of its new fall series that were suffering from the lowest ratings of the network’s latest crop, reports our friend Scott Collins in the Los Angeles Times’ Show Tracker.

"Ironside," a remake of the classic TV series, starred Blair Underwood, while "Welcome to the Family" was about two multi-ethnic families, with the Times describing it as a "Modern Family" clone.

With "Ironside" leaving its 10 p.m. ET/PT Wednesday time slot, NBC will air "Dateline" crime packages and holiday specials in its place until January. In the new year, "Chicago P.D.," an offshoot of "Chicago Fire," will take over the time period.

The original "Ironside," starring Raymond Burr, ran on NBC from 1967 to 1975.
"Welcome to the Family," a sitcom that was seen on Thursday nights at 8:30 p.m. ET/PT, will be replaced by "Parks and Recreation," which will expand to fill the entire 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. block, as "Parks" currently airs at 8 p.m. "Community" will return in January in the 8 p.m. slot, followed by "Parks."

The article notes: "The moves come as NBC finds itself at a crossroads. The network — which suffered through years of poor ratings — is No. 1 so far this fall in the key adults aged 18 to 49 demographic, the group most sought by big advertisers.
"However, most of that strength is due to Sunday NFL football games — which disappear in January — as well as the singing smash ‘The Voice.’"

The story notes that NBC will likely be able to avoid the ratings drop-off it had last January because this winter the network will broadcast the 2014 Winter Olympics.

  1. my family enjoy this series and not all the trash you and they tv channels have on. we enjoy the tv series very much. and hope at a other tv channel will pick it up. tere is so much trash on tv. allways the good program get canceled.

  2. ironside was an awesome show but would have preferred blair not be a character in wheelchair. amazing how every place was ADA compliant.
watched welcome to the family just cause mary mcormack was in it, miss her from her USA show. show was funny. fresh from the tired old modern family that got stale after the 1st 2 seasons.
sad to see 2 good shows go while plenty of crap remains.

  3. Once again the bean counters give us premature ejection. Both shows were good and with some time would have grown legs. NBC won’t see me watching their replacements. NBC has gone from being the peacock network to the buzzard network.
