TV Show Boosts Tourism for East Coast Town

A village on the East Coast with a famous name is seeing a bump in tourism attributed to a new hit television series. EW.com’s Inside TV reports that the tourism business is booming in the village of Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.

The town is getting attention because of the new Fox series "Sleepy Hollow," which is based on the 1819 short story "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," the story reports.

"We’ve always had people from all over come to our Halloween events, but the Fox show has really added to that," said Anthony Giaccio, the town’s administrator. That’s helping a town that was hit by the 1996 closure of a General Motors assembly plant, the piece notes. The town voted that same year to change its name to Sleepy Hollow from North Tarrytown.

The piece adds: "Giaccio said the tourist season seems to be getting longer, starting in mid-September and stretching into mid-November, but the village hopes to encourage people to visit at other times of the year as well. A current TV ad, created using a state grant, says Sleepy Hollow ‘isn’t all about horror’ — but the characters intoning the phrase include the Grim Reaper and a disembodied head."

The original story focused on a superstitious schoolteacher named Ichabod Crane, while in the TV show, he’s reimagined as a savvy Oxford-educated Englishman who wakes up in modern America after sleeping for more than 200 years. The show is actually taped in Wilmington, N.C., the piece adds.
